How to learn your first ukulele chords, in order
All ukulele chords
Twelve roots across, fifteen chord types down. Sharps and flats: C♯ is the same key as D♭, E♭ as D♯, F♯ as G♭, A♭ as G♯ and B♭ as A♯, so each chord appears once under its usual name.
Reading a ukulele chord chart
The four vertical lines are the strings G, C, E and A, left to right as you look at the ukulele facing you. The horizontal lines are frets, and the dots show where fingers go, numbered 1 for the index up to 4 for the pinky. A string without a dot plays open. Each chart here also gives the shape as four numbers, G string first: 0003 is C, 2010 is F.
Why the ukulele sounds the way it does
Standard tuning is G C E A with a high G: the G string is tuned above the C, not below it. That "re-entrant" tuning squeezes every chord into a small, bright range and is the reason a strummed ukulele sounds like a ukulele. It also means the lowest note of a chord is often not the root, which is fine; the ear still hears the chord.
If you already play guitar, the shapes will look familiar. A ukulele is tuned like the top four guitar strings with a capo at the 5th fret, so the guitar's D shape becomes the ukulele's G and the guitar's A shape becomes the ukulele's D.
Getting started
C, Am, F and G make a four-chord loop you'll use constantly, and three of them need only one or two fingers. Strum with the pad of your index finger over the spot where the neck meets the body, and keep the wrist loose, as if shaking water off your hand. The beginner ukulele page puts the first chords in a sensible order.
Soprano, concert, tenor, baritone
Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles are all tuned G C E A, so every chart here works on them; they differ in size and fret spacing, and a tenor is a little easier for large hands. A baritone ukulele is tuned D G B E like the top four guitar strings, so it uses guitar shapes with guitar names. If your chords sound wrong on a baritone, that's why, and the guitar chord pages will serve you better.
Ukulele chord questions
What are the easiest ukulele chords?
C (0003), Am (2000), F (2010) and G (0232). With those four you can play hundreds of songs in C major.
What tuning are these ukulele chords in?
Standard GCEA, the tuning of soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles. The G string is tuned higher than the C, so the lowest note is C.
How do you read a ukulele chord chart?
The vertical lines are the strings G, C, E and A from left to right; the horizontal lines are frets. Numbers in the dots are fingers: 1 index to 4 pinky. 0 means play the string open.
Are ukulele chords the same as guitar chords?
The shapes look like the top four guitar strings capoed at the 5th fret, so the same shape has a different name: the ukulele G shape (0232) is the guitar's D shape.
