How to play Fsus2 on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-0-1-3, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: E string, 1st fret (F).
- Middle finger: A string, 3rd fret (C).
- Let the open G and C strings ring (G and C).
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.

- 5-7-8-8: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
Fsus2 the capo way
A capo turns an open chord into Fsus2: capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Dsus2 shape (2-2-0-0) or capo on the 5th fret and play the open Csus2 shape (0-2-3-3). Handy when the rest of the song's chords also have open shapes in that position.
Moving between Fsus2 and its neighbours
Songs rarely hold Fsus2 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- F (resolves up to the third): Fsus2 (0-0-1-3) to F (2-0-1-0): your index finger stays put, your middle finger lands on the G string, 2nd fret. An easy one to get up to speed. F and C carry over from one chord to the other. F on ukulele
- B♭ (IV in F major): Fsus2 (0-0-1-3) to B♭ (3-2-1-1): your index finger stays put, the middle finger goes to the A string, 1st fret, the ring finger comes down on the C string, 2nd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 3rd fret. Listen for F, which stays put while the rest moves. B♭ on ukulele
- C (V in F major): Fsus2 (0-0-1-3) to C (0-0-0-3): move the index finger to the A string, 3rd fret. Shared notes: G and C. C on ukulele
Fsus2 replaces the third with the second, so it is neither major nor minor. All 3 notes of Fsus2 fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The open second in Fsus2 usually rises to the third, so play Fsus2 then F and listen for it to settle. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
A short Fsus2 drill
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: G, C, F, C. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Finish by moving between 0-0-1-3 and 5-7-8-8 to learn two positions of the same chord.
