How to play Fsus2 on guitar
Shape 1, x-x-3-0-1-1, reading from the low E string on the left:
- Index finger: B string, 1st fret (C).
- Middle finger: high E string, 1st fret (F).
- Ring finger: D string, 3rd fret (F).
- Let the open G string ring (G).
- Don't play the low E and A strings: start your strum on the D string.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- With four strings sounding, a shorter strum works best: start on the first played string and stop at the high E.
Other ways to play Fsus2
- x-8-10-10-8-8: barre shape at the 8th fret, medium. The root is on the A string; it's the Asus2 shape moved up the neck.
- x-8-5-5-6-8: partial barre shape at the 5th fret, medium. Same notes, stacked differently, so it sounds a little different.
- x-x-15-12-13-13: movable shape at the 12th fret, medium. Only the thinner strings sound, which cuts through a band without getting muddy.
Capo shortcuts for Fsus2
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Dsus2 shape (x-x-0-2-3-0) or capo on the 5th fret and play the open Csus2 shape (x-3-0-0-3-3). The chord sounds as Fsus2 because the capo raises every string by 3 half steps.
Changing from Fsus2 to the chords around it
Songs rarely hold Fsus2 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- F (resolves up to the third): Fsus2 (x-x-3-0-1-1) to F (1-3-3-2-1-1): the index finger lays across the low E to high E strings at the 1st fret, your middle finger lands on the G string, 2nd fret, the ring finger slides across to the A string at the same fret, the pinky finger comes down on the D string, 3rd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. The two chords share F and C, which is why the change sounds smooth. F on guitar
- B♭ (IV in F major): Fsus2 (x-x-3-0-1-1) to B♭ (x-1-3-3-3-1): the index finger lays across the A to high E strings at the 1st fret, the middle finger goes to the D string, 3rd fret, the ring finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, the pinky finger comes down on the B string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. Shared note: F. B♭ on guitar
- C (V in F major): Fsus2 (x-x-3-0-1-1) to C (x-3-2-0-1-0): your index finger stays put, move the middle finger to the D string, 2nd fret, the ring finger slides across to the A string at the same fret. G and C carry over from one chord to the other. C on guitar
Fsus2 replaces the third with the second, so it is neither major nor minor. The open second in Fsus2 usually rises to the third, so play Fsus2 then F and listen for it to settle. On guitar you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
A short Fsus2 drill
Arpeggiate x-x-3-0-1-1 from the lowest string: F, G, C, F. Then strum it and listen for the same 4 notes together. Finish by moving between x-x-3-0-1-1 and x-8-10-10-8-8 to learn two positions of the same chord.
