How to play Dsus2 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-2-0-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the G string at the 2nd fret, which is A.
- Put your middle finger on the C string at the 2nd fret, which is D.
- The open E and A strings add E and A; don't touch them.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play Dsus2
- 7-9-10-7: movable shape at the 7th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Dsus2 the capo way
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open Csus2 shape (0-2-3-3) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open Gsus2 shape (0-2-3-0). The chord sounds as Dsus2 because the capo raises every string by 2 half steps.
Dsus2 chord changes
The chords Dsus2 usually goes to, and what changes under your fingers.
- D (resolves up to the third): Dsus2 (2-2-0-0) to D (2-2-2-0): your index and middle fingers stay put, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 2nd fret. An easy one to get up to speed. D and A carry over from one chord to the other. D on ukulele
- G (IV in D major): Dsus2 (2-2-0-0) to G (0-2-3-2): the index finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, your middle finger lands on the A string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 3rd fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. The two chords share D, which is why the change sounds smooth. G on ukulele

The open second in Dsus2 usually rises to the third, so play Dsus2 then D and listen for it to settle. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Getting Dsus2 under your fingers
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: A, D, E, A. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Then switch to 7-9-10-7 and back four times without looking at your hand.
