How to play G on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-2-3-2, reading from the G string on the left:
- D: index finger, 2nd fret of the C string.
- B: middle finger, 2nd fret of the A string.
- G: ring finger, 3rd fret of the E string.
- Leave the G string open: G.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play G
- 7-7-7-5: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 12-11-10-10: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Capo shortcuts for G
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open F shape (2-0-1-0), capo on the 3rd fret and play the open E shape (1-4-0-2), capo on the 5th fret and play the open D shape (2-2-2-0) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open C shape (0-0-0-3). The chord sounds as G because the capo raises every string by 2 half steps.
Changing from G to the chords around it
The chords G usually goes to, and what changes under your fingers.
- C (IV in G major): G (0-2-3-2) to C (0-0-0-3): your index finger lands on the A string, 3rd fret. Listen for G, which stays put while the rest moves. C on ukulele
- D (V in G major): G (0-2-3-2) to D (2-2-2-0): the index finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, the middle finger goes to the C string, 2nd fret, your ring finger lands on the E string, 2nd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. Shared note: D. D on ukulele
- Em (vi in G major): G (0-2-3-2) to Em (0-4-3-2): the index finger goes to the A string, 2nd fret, the middle finger goes to the E string, 3rd fret, move the ring finger to the C string, 4th fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. G and B carry over from one chord to the other. Em on ukulele
G is a major triad: bright, settled and stable. All 3 notes of G fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
A short G drill
Before strumming, play 0-2-3-2 note by note: G then D then G then B. A dead note tells you exactly which finger to fix. Finish by moving between 0-2-3-2 and 7-7-7-5 to learn two positions of the same chord.
