How to play Gm on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-2-3-1, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: A string, 1st fret (B♭).
- Middle finger: C string, 2nd fret (D).
- Ring finger: E string, 3rd fret (G).
- Let the open G string ring (G).
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Gm
- 7-7-6-5: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 12-10-10-10: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
Playing Gm with a capo
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Em shape (0-4-3-2), capo on the 5th fret and play the open Dm shape (2-2-1-0) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open Cm shape (0-3-3-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Changing from Gm to the chords around it
These are the changes you'll meet most often with Gm, using the first shape of each chord.
- C (V in F major): Gm (0-2-3-1) to C (0-0-0-3): move the index finger to the A string, 3rd fret. Listen for G, which stays put while the rest moves. C on ukulele
- B♭ (IV in F major): Gm (0-2-3-1) to B♭ (3-2-1-1): the index finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 1st fret, the ring finger goes to the C string, 2nd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. The two chords share B♭ and D, which is why the change sounds smooth. B♭ on ukulele
- F (I in F major): Gm (0-2-3-1) to F (2-0-1-0): the index finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, the middle finger slides across to the G string at the same fret. F on ukulele
Gm is a minor triad. All 3 notes of Gm fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
A short Gm drill
Arpeggiate 0-2-3-1 from the lowest string: G, D, G, B♭. Then strum it and listen for the same 4 notes together. Then switch to 7-7-6-5 and back four times without looking at your hand.
