How to play F♯m on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-1-2-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- C♯: index finger, 1st fret of the C string.
- A: middle finger, 2nd fret of the G string.
- F♯: ring finger, 2nd fret of the E string.
- Leave the A string open: A.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play F♯m
- 6-6-5-4: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 11-9-9-9: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
F♯m the capo way
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open Em shape (0-4-3-2), capo on the 4th fret and play the open Dm shape (2-2-1-0), capo on the 6th fret and play the open Cm shape (0-3-3-3) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open Bm shape (4-2-2-2). The chord sounds as F♯m because the capo raises every string by 2 half steps.
Moving between F♯m and its neighbours
Songs rarely hold F♯m for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- B (V in E major): F♯m (2-1-2-0) to B (4-3-2-2): move the index finger to the E string, 2nd fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 2nd fret, the ring finger goes to the C string, 3rd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the G string, 4th fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. Shared note: F♯. B on ukulele
- A (IV in E major): F♯m (2-1-2-0) to A (2-1-0-0): your index and middle fingers stay put. An easy one to get up to speed. Listen for A and C♯, which stay put while the rest moves. A on ukulele
- E (I in E major): F♯m (2-1-2-0) to E (1-4-0-2): the index finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 2nd fret, your ring finger lands on the C string, 4th fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. E on ukulele
Minor chords sound shaded compared with major ones. All 3 notes of F♯m fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
A short F♯m drill
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: A, C♯, F♯, A. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Then switch to 6-6-5-4 and back four times without looking at your hand.
You may also see it as G♭m; nothing changes on the ukulele.
