How to play Gsus2 on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-2-3-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the C string at the 2nd fret, which is D.
- Put your middle finger on the E string at the 3rd fret, which is G.
- The open G and A strings add G and A; don't touch them.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play Gsus2
- 7-7-5-5: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. Use it when the next chord sits nearby on the neck.
- 12-9-10-10: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
Capo shortcuts for Gsus2
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 5th fret and play the open Dsus2 shape (2-2-0-0) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open Csus2 shape (0-2-3-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.

- G (resolves up to the third): Gsus2 (0-2-3-0) to G (0-2-3-2): your index finger stays put, the middle finger goes to the A string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 3rd fret. G and D carry over from one chord to the other. G on ukulele
- C (IV in G major): Gsus2 (0-2-3-0) to C (0-0-0-3): the index finger goes to the A string, 3rd fret. G carries over from one chord to the other. C on ukulele
- D (V in G major): Gsus2 (0-2-3-0) to D (2-2-2-0): the index finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, the middle finger goes to the C string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 2nd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. The two chords share A and D, which is why the change sounds smooth. D on ukulele
Gsus2 replaces the third with the second, so it is neither major nor minor. All 3 notes of Gsus2 fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The open second in Gsus2 usually rises to the third, so play Gsus2 then G and listen for it to settle. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
Getting Gsus2 under your fingers
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: G, D, G, A. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Then switch to 7-7-5-5 and back four times without looking at your hand.
