How to play Esus2 on ukulele
Shape 1, 4-4-2-2, reading from the G string on the left, starts at the 2nd fret:
- Index finger: E string, 2nd fret (F♯).
- Middle finger: A string, 2nd fret (B).
- Ring finger: G string, 4th fret (B).
- Pinky: C string, 4th fret (E).
- The pinky takes a note here. Keep it curved and close to the fretboard between chords so it has less distance to travel.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Esus2
- 9-6-7-7: movable shape at the 6th fret, medium. Use it when the next chord sits nearby on the neck.
- 9-11-12-9: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
Esus2 the capo way
A capo turns an open chord into Esus2: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open Dsus2 shape (2-2-0-0) or capo on the 4th fret and play the open Csus2 shape (0-2-3-3). Handy when the rest of the song's chords also have open shapes in that position.
Changing from Esus2 to the chords around it
Songs rarely hold Esus2 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- E (resolves up to the third): Esus2 (4-4-2-2) to E (1-4-0-2): your middle finger stays put, the index finger goes to the G string, 1st fret, the ring finger slides across to the C string at the same fret. E and B carry over from one chord to the other. E on ukulele
- A (IV in E major): Esus2 (4-4-2-2) to A (2-1-0-0): move the index finger to the C string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the G string, 2nd fret. E carries over from one chord to the other. A on ukulele
- B (V in E major): Esus2 (4-4-2-2) to B (4-3-2-2): your index and middle fingers stay put, move the ring finger to the C string, 3rd fret, the pinky finger slides across to the G string at the same fret. The two chords share F♯ and B, which is why the change sounds smooth. B on ukulele
Esus2 replaces the third with the second, so it is neither major nor minor. All 3 notes of Esus2 fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. The open second in Esus2 usually rises to the third, so play Esus2 then E and listen for it to settle. The slow arpeggio button above makes that quality easy to hear.
Practice Esus2 in two minutes
Before strumming, play 4-4-2-2 note by note: B then E then F♯ then B. A dead note tells you exactly which finger to fix. Finish by moving between 4-4-2-2 and 9-6-7-7 to learn two positions of the same chord.
