How to play Dsus4 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-2-3-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: G string, 2nd fret (A).
- Middle finger: C string, 2nd fret (D).
- Ring finger: E string, 3rd fret (G).
- Let the open A string ring (A).
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Dsus4
- 7-7-5-5: movable shape at the 5th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 12-9-10-10: movable shape at the 9th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Dsus4 the capo way
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 2nd fret and play the open Csus4 shape (0-0-1-3) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open Gsus4 shape (0-2-3-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Dsus4 chord changes
Songs rarely hold Dsus4 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- D (resolves down to the third): Dsus4 (2-2-3-0) to D (2-2-2-0): your index and middle fingers stay put, the ring finger goes to the E string, 2nd fret. Very little moves, so this change comes fast. Listen for D and A, which stay put while the rest moves. D on ukulele
- G (IV in D major): Dsus4 (2-2-3-0) to G (0-2-3-2): your ring finger stays put, the index finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 2nd fret. Shared notes: D and G. G on ukulele
- A (V in D major): Dsus4 (2-2-3-0) to A (2-1-0-0): your index finger lands on the C string, 1st fret, the middle finger slides across to the G string at the same fret. The two chords share A, which is why the change sounds smooth. A on ukulele
Dsus4 lifts the third up to the fourth. All 3 notes of Dsus4 fit on the ukulele's four strings, with one of them doubled. Dsus4 holds the fourth where the third should be; drop it a half step or whole step into D or Dm to resolve. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
