How to play Asus4 on ukulele
Shape 1, 2-2-0-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the G string at the 2nd fret, which is A.
- Put your middle finger on the C string at the 2nd fret, which is D.
- The open E and A strings add E and A; don't touch them.
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.

- A (resolves down to the third): Asus4 (2-2-0-0) to A (2-1-0-0): your index finger lands on the C string, 1st fret, the middle finger slides across to the G string at the same fret. Listen for A and E, which stay put while the rest moves. A on ukulele
- D (IV in A major): Asus4 (2-2-0-0) to D (2-2-2-0): your index and middle fingers stay put, the ring finger comes down on the E string, 2nd fret. An easy one to get up to speed. The two chords share A and D, which is why the change sounds smooth. D on ukulele
- E (V in A major): Asus4 (2-2-0-0) to E (1-4-0-2): move the index finger to the G string, 1st fret, your middle finger lands on the A string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the C string, 4th fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. Listen for E, which stays put while the rest moves. E on ukulele
