How to play E♭7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 3-3-3-4, reading from the G string on the left, starts at the 3rd fret:
- Index finger: G string, 3rd fret (B♭).
- Middle finger: C string, 3rd fret (E♭).
- Ring finger: E string, 3rd fret (G).
- Pinky: A string, 4th fret (D♭).
- The pinky takes a note here. Keep it curved and close to the fretboard between chords so it has less distance to travel.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.

- 6-7-6-6: movable shape at the 6th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
Playing E♭7 with a capo
A capo turns an open chord into E♭7: capo on the 1st fret and play the open D7 shape (2-2-2-3), capo on the 3rd fret and play the open C7 shape (0-0-0-1), capo on the 4th fret and play the open B7 shape (2-3-2-0) or capo on the 6th fret and play the open A7 shape (0-1-0-0). Handy when the rest of the song's chords also have open shapes in that position.
Moving between E♭7 and its neighbours
Songs rarely hold E♭7 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- A♭ (the V7 pulls home a fifth below): E♭7 (3-3-3-4) to A♭ (1-3-4-3): your middle finger stays put, move the index finger to the G string, 1st fret, the ring finger slides across to the A string at the same fret, the pinky finger slides across to the E string at the same fret. E♭ carries over from one chord to the other. A♭ on ukulele
- A♭maj7 (I in A♭ major): E♭7 (3-3-3-4) to A♭maj7 (1-3-3-3): your middle and ring fingers stay put, your index finger lands on the G string, 1st fret, your pinky finger lands on the A string, 3rd fret. E♭ and G carry over from one chord to the other. A♭maj7 on ukulele
- Fm7 (vi in A♭ major): E♭7 (3-3-3-4) to Fm7 (1-3-1-3): move the index finger to the G string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the E string, 1st fret, the ring finger slides across to the C string at the same fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. E♭ carries over from one chord to the other. Fm7 on ukulele
E♭7 is a dominant seventh chord: a major triad with a flattened seventh on top. All 4 notes of E♭7 fit on the ukulele's four strings. On ukulele you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
A short E♭7 drill
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: B♭, E♭, G, D♭. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Then switch to 6-7-6-6 and back four times without looking at your hand.
D♯7 is another spelling of E♭7. Same shape, same sound.
