How to play Fm7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 1-3-1-3, reading from the G string on the left:
- Index finger: G string, 1st fret (A♭).
- Middle finger: E string, 1st fret (F).
- Ring finger: C string, 3rd fret (E♭).
- Pinky: A string, 3rd fret (C).
- This shape uses your pinky. It feels weak at first; press with the tip and let the finger stay curved.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Fm7
- 5-5-4-6: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 8-8-8-8: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. A high voicing for when the low version is taken by another instrument.
Playing Fm7 with a capo
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 1st fret and play the open Em7 shape (0-2-0-2), capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Dm7 shape (2-2-1-3) or capo on the 6th fret and play the open Bm7 shape (2-2-2-2). The chord sounds as Fm7 because the capo raises every string by a half step.
