How to play B♭maj7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 3-2-1-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- Put your index finger on the E string at the 1st fret, which is F.
- Put your middle finger on the C string at the 2nd fret, which is D.
- Put your ring finger on the G string at the 3rd fret, which is B♭.
- The open A string adds A; don't touch it.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play B♭maj7
- 7-9-6-8: movable shape at the 6th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 10-10-10-12: movable shape at the 10th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
B♭maj7 the capo way
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 1st fret and play the open Amaj7 shape (1-1-0-0), capo on the 3rd fret and play the open Gmaj7 shape (0-2-2-2) or capo on the 5th fret and play the open Fmaj7 shape (2-4-1-3). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
B♭maj7 chord changes
Songs rarely hold B♭maj7 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- E♭maj7 (IV in B♭ major): B♭maj7 (3-2-1-0) to E♭maj7 (3-3-3-5): your index finger lands on the G string, 3rd fret, move the middle finger to the C string, 3rd fret, the ring finger goes to the E string, 3rd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the A string, 5th fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. The two chords share B♭ and D, which is why the change sounds smooth. E♭maj7 on ukulele
- F7 (V in B♭ major): B♭maj7 (3-2-1-0) to F7 (2-3-1-3): your index finger stays put, the middle finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, the ring finger slides across to the C string at the same fret, the pinky finger comes down on the A string, 3rd fret. Listen for F and A, which stay put while the rest moves. F7 on ukulele
