How to play Emaj7 on ukulele
Shape 1, 1-3-0-2, reading from the G string on the left:
- G♯: index finger, 1st fret of the G string.
- B: middle finger, 2nd fret of the A string.
- D♯: ring finger, 3rd fret of the C string.
- Leave the E string open: E.
- Arch your fingers so their tips come down vertically. That keeps them off the open strings, which have to ring for the chord to sound complete.
- On ukulele you strum all four strings. The top G string is tuned higher than the C, which is why ukulele chords sound bright and close.
Other ways to play Emaj7
- 4-4-4-6: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. A different set of strings gives a different color of the same chord.
- 8-8-7-7: movable shape at the 7th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
Playing Emaj7 with a capo
With a capo you can skip the harder shapes: capo on the 4th fret and play the open Cmaj7 shape (0-0-0-2) or capo on the 7th fret and play the open Amaj7 shape (1-1-0-0). Everything above the capo is fingered exactly like the open chord.
Changing from Emaj7 to the chords around it
These are the changes you'll meet most often with Emaj7, using the first shape of each chord.
- Amaj7 (IV in E major): Emaj7 (1-3-0-2) to Amaj7 (1-1-0-0): your index finger stays put, move the middle finger to the C string, 1st fret. That makes it one of the quickest changes from this chord. E and G♯ carry over from one chord to the other. Amaj7 on ukulele
- B7 (V in E major): Emaj7 (1-3-0-2) to B7 (2-3-2-2): move the index finger to the G string, 2nd fret, the middle finger slides across to the E string at the same fret, your ring finger lands on the A string, 2nd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the C string, 3rd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. The two chords share B and D♯, which is why the change sounds smooth. B7 on ukulele
- C♯m7 (vi in E major): Emaj7 (1-3-0-2) to C♯m7 (1-1-0-2): your index finger stays put, your middle finger lands on the C string, 1st fret, the ring finger goes to the A string, 2nd fret. E, G♯ and B carry over from one chord to the other. C♯m7 on ukulele
