How to play C6 on ukulele
Shape 1, 0-0-0-0, reading from the G string on the left:
- The open G, C, E and A strings add G, C, E and A; don't touch them.
- Strum with the pad of your index finger or thumb, all four strings, across the spot where the neck meets the body.
Other ways to play C6
- 5-4-5-3: movable shape at the 3rd fret, medium. Use it when the next chord sits nearby on the neck.
- 9-9-8-10: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. Higher up the neck it sounds brighter; handy when another guitar is already playing a lower shape.
- 12-12-12-12: movable shape at the 12th fret, medium. Up the neck the chord gets thinner and brighter, a good contrast to the open version.
Playing C6 with a capo
No barre needed if a capo is allowed: capo on the 5th fret and play the open G6 shape (0-2-0-2). The chord sounds as C6 because the capo raises every string by 5 half steps.
Changing from C6 to the chords around it
Songs rarely hold C6 for long. Here's what your hand does on the moves that come up most.
- F (IV in C major): C6 (0-0-0-0) to F (2-0-1-0): the index finger comes down on the E string, 1st fret, the middle finger comes down on the G string, 2nd fret. C and A carry over from one chord to the other. F on ukulele
- G (V in C major): C6 (0-0-0-0) to G (0-2-3-2): the index finger comes down on the C string, 2nd fret, the middle finger comes down on the A string, 2nd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. Shared note: G. G on ukulele
- Am (vi in C major): C6 (0-0-0-0) to Am (2-0-0-0): the index finger comes down on the G string, 2nd fret. The two chords share C, E and A, which is why the change sounds smooth. Am on ukulele

A short C6 drill
Pick shape 1 one string at a time, low to high: G, C, E, A. Every note should ring clearly; if one thuds, adjust that finger before you strum. Finish by moving between 0-0-0-0 and 5-4-5-3 to learn two positions of the same chord.
