F♯m7 and the chords around it
The moves below are the ones you'll meet most, shown for guitar and piano.
- F♯m7 → B7 (V in E major)
Guitar: F♯m7 (2-4-2-2-2-2) to B7 (x-2-1-2-0-2): the index finger goes to the D string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the G string, 2nd fret, the pinky finger comes down on the high E string, 2nd fret. Everything moves: lift the whole hand and place the new shape in one go. Shared notes: F♯ and A.
Piano: F♯m7 to B7: play B7 in 2nd inversion (F♯–A–B–D♯) and F♯ and A stay under the same fingers, while C♯ moves down to B and E down to D♯. B7 - F♯m7 → Amaj7 (IV in E major)
Guitar: F♯m7 (2-4-2-2-2-2) to Amaj7 (x-0-2-1-2-0): your index finger lands on the G string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the D string, 2nd fret, the ring finger comes down on the B string, 2nd fret. No finger can stay, so practice lifting all of them together and landing the new shape as a unit. Listen for A, C♯ and E, which stay put while the rest moves.
Piano: F♯m7 to Amaj7: play Amaj7 in 3rd inversion (G♯–A–C♯–E) and A, C♯ and E stay under the same fingers, while F♯ moves up to G♯. Amaj7 - F♯m7 → Emaj7 (I in E major)
Guitar: F♯m7 (2-4-2-2-2-2) to Emaj7 (0-2-1-1-0-0): your index finger lands on the D string, 1st fret, move the middle finger to the G string, 1st fret, the ring finger comes down on the A string, 2nd fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. Listen for E, which stays put while the rest moves.
Piano: F♯m7 to Emaj7: play Emaj7 in 1st inversion (G♯–B–D♯–E) and E stays under the same finger, while F♯ moves up to G♯, A up to B and C♯ up to D♯. Emaj7

How F♯m7 is built
F♯m7 is a minor seventh chord: a minor triad plus a minor seventh. It is mellow rather than sad, and slides easily into other chords, which is why funk, R&B and jazz lean on it.
Count keys (black and white) from F♯: 3 half steps up to A, 4 half steps up to C♯ then 3 half steps up to E. Written with flats or sharps the other way round it's G♭m7; the sound is identical.
