The sound of D natural minor scale

Play D natural minor next to D major and three notes drop: the 3rd, 6th and 7th. That lowered 3rd is what makes it sound minor; the lowered 6th and 7th make it softer and less pushy at the top.

Its signature sound is B♭ and C, the major chords on the ♭6 and ♭7, stepping back to Dm: B♭ – C – Dm.

Compared with D major scale, D natural minor scale has F, B♭ and C where the other has F♯, B and C♯; the other four notes are shared. Hear D major scale and compare.

D natural minor scale uses the same seven notes as F major, starting from D instead of F.

On piano and on guitar

Keyboard players: one black (B♭), six white.

On guitar the root sits at the 10th fret of the low E string. The box above covers frets 8–14 and holds 17 notes of the scale across all six strings; play it low string to high.

The key of D minor

Songs in D minor are built from these notes, so the key signature has one flat (B♭). The relative major is F major: same notes, starting on the 3rd degree. The parallel major, D major, starts on the same note with different notes above it.

Same notes, different home: C Mixolydian (starting on the 7th note, C), E Locrian (starting on the 2nd note, E), F major (starting on the 3rd note, F), G Dorian (starting on the 4th note, G), A Phrygian (starting on the 5th note, A) and B♭ Lydian (starting on the 6th note, B♭). Play any of them over a drone on its first note and the mood changes, even though the keys you press don't.

Finding D natural minor on the neck

Anchor points for D: low E string fret 10, A string fret 5. Most guitarists learn it in five overlapping positions; on the low E string they begin around frets 3, 5, 7, 10 and 12. On guitar it shares every note with the relative major, so the same boxes work with a different root in mind.

On the piano, D natural minor scale uses 1 black key (B♭) and 6 white.

Try it in thirds to stop it sounding like an exercise: D–F, E–G, F–A, G–B♭, A–C, B♭–D, C–E, then back down.
