How to play F♯dim7 on guitar
Shape 1, 2-0-1-2-1-2, reading from the low E string on the left:
- Lay your index finger flat across the 3 strings from the D string to the B string at the 1st fret.
- Middle finger: low E string, 2nd fret (F♯).
- Ring finger: G string, 2nd fret (A).
- Pinky: high E string, 2nd fret (F♯).
- Let the open A string ring (A).
- Only part of the finger needs to press here, so flatten just the tip section across those strings and keep the rest of the hand relaxed.
- If an open string sounds dead, a fingertip is leaning on it. Come down more on the tips, with your knuckles bent.
- This shape uses your pinky. It feels weak at first; press with the tip and let the finger stay curved.
Other ways to play F♯dim7
- 2-x-1-2-1-x: movable shape, medium. Built on the Edim7 open shape with the barre as a movable nut; the root is on the 6th string.
- x-9-10-8-10-x: movable shape at the 8th fret, medium. This is the open Adim7 shape with a barre behind it, root on the 5th string.
- x-x-4-5-4-5: movable shape at the 4th fret, medium. Fewer strings, so it sounds lighter and is quicker to change to.

F♯dim7 is a diminished seventh: three minor thirds stacked, so the chord divides the octave into four equal parts. F♯dim7 can stand in for a dominant seventh a half step below, which is why it links chords so smoothly. On guitar you hear it best picked slowly, string by string.
