Where Baug usually goes next
Here's what the hand does on the most common changes, on guitar and on piano.
- Baug → E (the raised fifth pushes up into the IV)
Guitar: Baug (x-2-1-0-0-3) to E (0-2-2-1-0-0): your middle finger stays put, the index finger slides across to the G string at the same fret, the ring finger goes to the D string, 2nd fret. B carries over from one chord to the other.
Piano: Baug to E: play E in 2nd inversion (B–E–G♯) and B stays under the same finger, while D♯ moves up to E and F𝄪 up to G♯. E - Baug → F♯ (V in B major)
Guitar: Baug (x-2-1-0-0-3) to F♯ (2-4-4-3-2-2): the index finger lays across the low E to high E strings at the 2nd fret, your middle finger lands on the G string, 3rd fret, move the ring finger to the A string, 4th fret, the pinky finger comes down on the D string, 4th fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once.
Piano: Baug to F♯: play F♯ in 1st inversion (A♯–C♯–F♯), while B moves down to A♯, D♯ down to C♯ and F𝄪 down to F♯. F♯ - Baug → G♯m (vi in B major)
Guitar: Baug (x-2-1-0-0-3) to G♯m (4-6-6-4-4-4): the index finger lays across the low E to high E strings at the 4th fret, move the middle finger to the A string, 6th fret, your ring finger lands on the D string, 6th fret. Nothing carries over, so drill it slowly, lifting and landing all fingers at once. The two chords share B and D♯, which is why the change sounds smooth.
Piano: Baug to G♯m: play G♯m in 1st inversion (B–D♯–G♯) and B and D♯ stay under the same fingers, while F𝄪 moves up to G♯. G♯m
Guitar with a capo: capo 7, Eaug shape.
How Baug is built
Baug is an augmented triad: two major thirds stacked, with a raised fifth. It sounds suspended and dreamlike. Because the major thirds split the octave evenly, Baug shares its three notes with E♭aug and Gaug.
Count keys (black and white) from B: 4 half steps up to D♯ then 4 half steps up to F𝄪.
| Note | Role | Half steps | Hear it |
|---|---|---|---|
| B | root | 0 | |
| D♯ | major third | 4 | |
| F𝄪 | augmented fifth | 8 |
